Girl Scouts - Our celebration of Women’s History Month continues with Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. In college Switzer’s school did not have a women’s running team, so she trained with the men’s cross-country team. At the time of Switzer’s first Boston Marathon, she signed up using her initials but did not intend to mislead officials. However, they were upset when they discovered that she was a woman and tried to forcibly remove her from the race. Her entry created an uproar, capturing the public’s attention regarding women in sports. Her “Boston incident” started a successful marathon career. Switzer has run more than 35 races, winning the 1974 New York City Marathon and scoring her personal-best time of 2:51:33, and in 1975 placing second in the very marathon that tried to exclude her. Switzer has used her influence to create programs that have affected more than a million women, which led to the inclusion of the women’s marathon in the Olympics. | Facebook
