I made these ledges out of naturaly deceased ash wood trees - aged for over a year.
I decided to make my own wood cage steps a while ago and I've finally got around to doing it. Knowing that some wood is toxic to rats, I was careful about sourcing suitable wood for the project. While safety was my #1 priority, I also wanted my cage accessories to be eco friendly so I searched for rat safe wood available in my local area. Kiln dried pine board was also an option but its safety is a continuous debate within the rat community. I opted to err on the side of caution and used recently deceased ash trees that I found locally. From there I split each trunk and branch lengthwise, cut the pieces to my desired length, and inserted a bolt so the ledge would mount to the cage wall. Each block was then sanded carefully to preserve the natural beauty of the wood.
