Картина в манере Шишкина переносит зрителя на бескрайние просторы русских полей. Простота мотива, отсутствие какой-либо красивости и вычурности завораживают. Бездонное небо занимает большую часть холста. В его пейзажах никогда не было столько неба. Только что закончилась гроза, и тяжёлые грозовые тучи, кажется, уплывают вдаль. Земля, пропитанная влагой, предстаёт перед нами во всём своём великолепии. Зритель, «входя» в картину, словно ступает на мокрую от дождя дорогу, которая петляет среди полей спелой ржи.
