52K views · 1.3K reactions | FYI…I put my pricing formula below and you can also comment “pricing” if you want the link to my blog post on this topic which goes into a bit more detail. I posted a reel a couple of days ago about not being able to earn more than $30/hour baking which led to some questions. If I pay myself more that $30/hour to bake, my baked goods are generally priced too high for my area. There is one exception to this…sourdough bread. It’s ingredient costs are quite low and the demand is high so my hourly wage is also much higher for that item. Anyway, this is exactly why I added supplemental items to my menu and also why I began to generate additional income beyond only baking (join my Pink or Platinum Plan to access all of my courses and recipes). When pricing my baked goods, I use my pricing formula and consider the following elements: Hourly Wage: I first determine my desired hourly wage. For me, I always aim for twice the minimum wage in my state (that’s $30/hour). For my area, I’ve found that twice the hourly wage is my typical maximum without risking my products being overpriced. Time Involved to Prepare: Once I know my hourly wage, I determine how long it takes me to make said item...for example, if 36 cupcakes takes 2 hours, my labor cost is now $60 (my hourly wage x 2). Ingredients/Packaging: I then determine the cost of ingredients/packaging. Let’s say that total is $15. Total all Costs: Now I total my $60 for labor plus my ingredients and my packaging costs for 36 cupcakes. My total is $75. Overhead Costs: Once I have my total cost from 1-5 above, I add 10% (7.50) for overhead costs (electricity, appliance use, etc.). Business Profit: I also add 10% (7.50) for business profit. Total Costs of 1-7 above: Now I total everything together: hourly wage + ingredients + packaging + overhead + business profit = $90. I divide that 90 by 36 cupcakes which is $2.50 per cupcake. Final Step: I then add a cushion so I can offer sales, discounts, price breaks, etc. So cupcakes for me usually end up at about $3/each. And that’s it!
