Tamba ware storage jar with matching lid 19th century Edo period Stoneware with white slip under clear glaze, and brown glaze H: 26.9 W: 20.0 cm Japan. Covered jars like this one, in a range of sizes, were made in large quantities in Tachikui and were used to store salt and condiments in the kitchen. Under a coating of colorless glaze, white slip (liquid clay) conceals the dark clay. Brown glaze on the interior, visible around the lip, sealed the jar against leakage.
