Lava fountain frozen during eruption. The rarest lava on Earth, has some unusual properties. Unlike most lavas, this is a carbonate rather than a silicate, and erupts from Oldoinyo Lengai, a volcano in Tanzania. It comes out at a very low temperature, roughly 500 Celsius, is very viscous (runs like water) and freezes rapidly. The fountains can solidify in the air in a short time, creating fragile and ephemeral 'lavafalls', the volcanic equivalent of a sandcastle. Image credit: Carsten Peter
