August Macke (1887-1914) was one of the leading members of the Der Blaue Reiter. He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art. August Macke's oeuvre can be considered as Expressionism and also as part of Fauvism (as in this painting). The paintings concentrate primarily on expressing feelings and moods rather than reproducing objective reality, usually distorting colour and form.
