But simply recognizing this isn’t enough to shift us into a higher state of self-connection—one where the unknown excites rather than intimidates us. Personally, I’ve found practical ways to step outside my comfort zone, breaking habits and keeping myself in a state of constant research. Every painting I create is both a rehearsal and an exploration. A successful painting isn’t just about beautifully depicting a subject, object, or feeling—it’s about leaving the canvas knowing I’ve pushed my learning further. Rosso Emerald Crimson on Instagram: "Breaking down the portrait painting process in 4 main steps — 1.sketching 2.blocking in 3. rendering, 4. hair & background. One important step that is missing in this process reel, is the preliminary preparation of the panel/ground/background. This was prepared using mixed media, including acrylic paint, spray paint and gilding / metal leaf. The portrait and hair are painted entirely in oil. I always seal the ground with a wash of non-absorbent acrylic primer from @mhpaints prior to use oil paint. This step is crucial to avoid oil paint from sinking-in, and repaint it again!
