Andrew Molera State Beach in Big Sur, California
Andrew Molera State Park Beach is a long sandy, rocky, and driftwood-covered beach along the base of the Big Sur headlands. This is the largest state park along the Big Sur coast. It has open meadows, high ridges, groves of sycamore and redwood trees, a river, many trails, and one of the best beaches to explore in the area. It requires quite a walk to reach the beach. Surfers will make this trek when the conditions are ideal as the Big Sur Rivermouth is one of the rare surf spots in Big Sur.

Bixby Creek Bridge, Big Sur California
Welcome to one of the world’s most unforgettable stretches of coastline. This roughly 90-mile-long stretch of redwood- and fog-trimmed waterfront between Carmel-by-the-Sea and Hearst Castle draws you (and writers like Henry Miller and Beat Generation darling Jack Kerouac) in with a magic allure that is almost palpable. Bixby Bridge, Big Sur’s version of the Golden Gate is a must-see road trip spot for many and probably the most Instagrammed feature along the Highway 1 coastline.

Bixby Creek Bridge, Big Sur California
Bixby Creek Bridge, also known as Bixby Canyon Bridge, on the Big Sur coast of California, is one of the most photographed bridges in California due to its aesthetic design, graceful architecture and magnificent setting. The bridge's location on the scenic Central Coast of California, the parabolic shape of the arch, the tall spandrel columns, and the architectural piers contribute to an intense aesthetic experience.

Views of Big Sur from the Pacific Coast Highway
The classic drive through Big Sur, along twisting Highway 1, offers plenty of pullovers at places like seen-it-in-a-million-car-commercials Bixby Bridge. Stop at parks along the coastline and look up to see endangered California condors, North America’s largest birds, or look down to scan the swells for migrating whales or sea otters floating among dense beds of kelp, California’s signature seaweed.

Palm Trees and Cactus in Los Angeles
The Mexican fan palm is what we know as the iconic symbol of California – giant sentinels towering over us in long lines down the streets of LA. It’s the branding of In-N-Out, the symbol of the movie industry, the leviathans standing tall over the strip-malls and low lying sprawl of Southern California. Hollywood immediately invokes the images of palm trees and mirrored sunglasses. Palm trees line the streets of communities from San Diego to Santa Barbara County. Photography by Helen Nishimura
On Cape Cod, summer is a verb. In a single day you can plunge into the bracing Atlantic, jump off docks into warm, briny salt rivers, rinse in sweet water ponds, play barefoot badminton in brittle grass fields, harvest oysters and gorge on lobsters, clams, and cod fresh off the boat. With the night winding down we keep an eye out for shooting stars and sip sweating tumblers of vodka with just a splash of cranberry juice and a twist of lime – the famous Cape Codder. Visit the Amalfi Coast
Planning a summer vacation to Italy? The Amalfi Coast does not countenance cowards. Driving its entire length—34 miles—is not so much a trip as a deferred plunge. Terraced ancient villages, corniche roads, and your tiny rental car all feel as if they might tilt and tumble into the Tyrrhenian Sea at any moment. So we surrendered to gravity and just rented a boat. I recommend you do the same to get the most of your time in this storied Italian destination. Architectural photography by Mike Selsky

Sloths in Costa Rica
Looking to plan a tropical vacation? Pura Vida, the self-proclaimed motto of Costa Rica, meaning “pure life,” seems to hit that mark with ease. A country that inspires woolgathering of tropical beaches with perfect surf, rain forest canopy views of active volcanoes, and enchanting encounters with spider monkeys, butterflies, sea turtles, sloths, crocodiles, toucans, jaguars, iguanas, and scarlet macaws can only be seen as a veritable paradise, utopia realized. Exploring in Colorado
One of the highest profile Colorado hiking trails is the Colorado Trail. Popular with backpackers the nearly 500-mile trail climbs, crosses and descends the Rocky Mountains between Denver and Durango, passing beneath 14ers, beside rushing rivers and through wildflower meadows. As one of the nation’s premier long-distance trails, it takes at least 21 days to traverse its entire length (though backpacking shorter sections is also a popular pursuit).
