A Chemise, or Shift, Under All Layers Layers, layers, layers. . .That’s what it takes to interpret the clothing of the working class. . .While I am not a stickler to 100% authenticity, there are certain guidelines that should be addressed if a person wishes to display a visual language to the 18th century onlookers. . .It is a facet of interpreting any century that will be much appreciated by those who want to see history come alive. For years I visited Colonial Williamsburg, knowing that…

I love the JP Ryan 18th century jacket pattern. The first time I made it, I followed the directions for construction, though I eliminated the stomacher and made it center close. The pattern directions have you construct the outer jacket then construct the lining and bag the lining turning it right side out when done Quick and easy, but not without problems. Now obviously I was aware that this was not historically accurate due to the fact that it used a machine. The second version, I made by…

It also laces in front over a half boned stomacher. (Meanwhile, that was a good invention – so easy to adjust to size!) The bodice is of good quality, but not quite historical. For other costuming adventures it would be perfectly fine though. As I don’t see myself having much use of it, I mean to sell it. Still, it is nice to have good…

Recently we had a lovely thick snowfall which provided an unexpected opportunity to photograph my 18th century winter wardrobe. This thick red wool jacket was the first one I made for myself back in June 2018 (You may be asking why in the world I chose wool for a June reenactment... the short and very simple answer is that it was in my stash, and I was in a hurry... Wool is actually quite insulating and probably saved me from dehydrating myself. 😉) The bayonet made a splendid bread toasting…
