Bornean orangutan

This is the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)! Endemic to Borneo's tropical and subtropical rainforests. The largest tree-dwelling mammal. The gardeners of the forest, they disperse seeds as they travel. Threatened by habitat loss, their forests are burned to build palm oil plantations and other industry. Illegally hunted for bushmeat, they are also killed to mitigate territorial conflicts with human interests; populations are rapidly decreasing. Critically Endangered.

The orangutan is one of our closest relatives, and yet we know comparatively little about them. They are an animal that we need to learn more about because perhaps knowing more about them will help us understand ourselves better. Hopefully, we can do this before it's too late.
