A response to a traumatic event or prolonged exposure to trauma can be in the form of dissociation. Dissociation occurs when there is disruption to that way in which we manage, connect and piece together differing part of our world. It can effect memory, sense of identity, and perceptions of the world. There are 3 types of dissociation associated with trauma. Primary dissociation, Secondary or Peritraumatic dissociation, and Tertiary dissociation.
