Students who are highly motivated readers make more effective use of reading comprehension strategies such as cooperative learning, graphic and semantic organizers, and questioning through a self directed system (Kirmizi, 2011). In order to support reading comprehension strategy use, teachers are encouraged to implement direct instruction on comprehension strategies in curricular and cross curricular areas, and implement a reward system in order to motivate use of these strategies independently.

The best way for disfluent readers to become fluent is by reading! These students need to focus on ACCURATE text reading, use decodable text, repeated readings, systemic daily practice of reading words accurately, modeling of fluent reading and encouraging students to read like they are talking. Students need LOTS of opportunities to read text (at their level) using choral, cloze, echo and partner reading. These are great fluency strategies are for interventions. #fluency #fluencystrategies
