Endoplasmic reticulum, continuous membrane system that forms a series of flattened sacs within the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells and serves multiple functions, being important particularly in the synthesis, folding, modification, and transport of proteins. All eukaryotic cells contain an endoplasmic reticulum.
