Black licorice can remind us of a visit to our favorite old-fashioned candy store, with rows and rows of jars filled with colorful confections like fruit gummies, taffy, and bricks of fresh chocolate fudge. Licorice comes in all shapes and sizes—from shoestrings to straws and twists, to pillowy-soft and super-salty like those found in Nordic countries. Treat yourself to a fun afternoon of DIY candy making at home with our easy recipe below.

Like many soft candies, licorice can quickly become hard and inedible if it is left in the open air or left too long in the wrapper after it was produced. You can soften licorice after it becomes stale by applying heat evenly to the candy, though this method often only works once. More than one ...

Homemade Black Licorice Nibs recipe: I love Black Licorice but my blood pressure doesn't. So I adapted this recipe to satisfy my sweet tooth and my heart. Sugar Free Black Licorice (or Licorice Gummies) 1/4 c unflavored gelatin 1/2 c natural sweetener of choice (I use a mixture of 2-3 for best flavor) 1/4 c heavy cream 1/2 c water* (see note about if you want to use Fennel…

a bowl filled with lots of chocolates on top of a table next to candy bars

If you don't like black licorice, these caramels will change your mind! I promise you, that they are chewy and yet become soft, as you begin to enjoy them. They have just the slightest hint of licorice, with notes of vanilla and butter. Even "licorice haters" liked these. Licorice lovers (like myself) went crazy over these. They aren't terribly difficult to make, though it's important that you have a few tools to make the job more efficient. These are going to be a portion of my Christmas…

raw meat on a black and white plate with checkered border around the edge, ready to be cooked

We were back in the kitchen, experimenting with more candy recipes. Our candy of choice for today was red licorice (I know, it's not very seasonally appropriate, but candy canes looked really difficult!). Just as with the tootsie rolls, gummy candy, and gumdrops, we found a number of recipes, ranging from kid friendly, and pretty simple, to candy thermometer difficult. Usually, we start with the easiest recipe, and work our way up to the most complicated. But, this time, we decided to mix…
