A turbocharger (or turbo) is a piece of turbine-driven forced induction equipment that increases the efficiency and power output of an internal combustion engine by forcing excess air into the combustion chamber. Typically, a turbo sucks air, cools it down, and feeds more air to the engine than it receives through its standard intake. However, it can be difficult to fully understand how a turbocharger works because of its depth and impenetrability.

In a compound turbocharger system, two turbos work in series, one after the other, to compress the incoming air, in contrast to a twin-turbo system where two turbos in parallel share the work.

Traditionally, diesel engines have always been seen as noisy, smelly and underpowered engines of little use other than in trucks, taxis and vans. But as diesel engines and their injection system controls have become more refined, the 1980s have seen that situation change. In the UK in 1985 there were almost 65,000 diesel cars sold (about 3.5 per cent of the total number of cars sold), compared with only 5380 in 1980.
