a woman looking at herself in the mirror

Vivian Maier spent some forty years working as a nanny in Chicago. When she died in 2009 at the age of eighty-three, she left behind well over a hundred thousand photographic negatives, evidence of decades spent wandering the streets of her hometown, as well as others cities and locales around the world.

Vivian Maier is the Emily Dickinson of street photography. Maier worked as a nanny in New York and Chicago for more than a half-century, and took thousands of brilliant photographs, never sharing them with anyone except, occasionally, for the children in her charge. Some of her negatives were found by chance, when a local real estate agent purchased them at an auction house; now an exhibition of her photography is traveling the world (this summer it's in the U.K.)....

a black and white photo of a woman in a dress walking away from a car

Documenting the fascinating discovery of an unknown street photographer, a website devoted to Vivian Maier provides a glimpse into the work of a prolific shutterbug. A nanny in Chicago — she once watched over Phil Donahue’s children — Maier had a…

Vivian Maier, an excellent New York street photographer who took thousand of photos in the 1950s and 60s, was left woefully unacknowledged during her time. It was only in 2011, two years after her death, that her photos were recognized for their raw beauty in a collection published by historian and collector John Maloof.

a woman sitting on a park bench looking at her cell phone

Vivian Maier, Self Portrait I have some information to share about Vivian Maier. I met with two of the people Vivian was a nanny for in the 1950's and early 1960's today. They gave me some information that contradicts what I heard from other sources (this source is accurate). But, all in all, she is still somewhat of a mystery, even to them. Vivian came here from France in the early 1930's and worked in a sweat shop in New York when she was about 11 or 12. She was not Jewish but a Catholic…

a woman holding a camera in front of her face

Finding Vivian Maier, the documentary about the nanny who's gained incredible posthumous fame for her previously unseen work as a photographer, was released this past weekend in the UK. But in addition to garnering reviews, it's also bringing a longstanding but little-covered conflict over Maier's work and archive to light.

a woman taking a selfie in front of a mirror with a camera on it

Today, the name Vivian Maier is synonymous with American street photography. But her work didn't become famous until 2009, two years after someone bid $400 on a box of negatives in Chicago. Maier, with her twin-lens Rolleiflex camera held cautiously to her body, took more than 150,000 photos from the 1940s through the 1970s. They show street life in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and many cities around the world. But Maier also turned the lens toward herself, as seen in these interesting…
