Watercolor ocean sunset

This one is 12" x 18", done from a photo taken this summer (2007) at Harbor Island, South Carolina. I'm trying a new technique here from the book by Joe Francis Dowden, Painting Water.

"Sunset ii", watercolour painting, 7.5 x 11" SOLD This is the second sunset demo from my class on Wednesday morning. This time, I painted the clouds on dry, white paper, puddling in the colour, and then put the lower sky with the pale yellow in afterwards. When that was dry, I put in another layer in the lower sky of duller orange, leaving the bright yellow to shine underneath the clouds. The colours of the clouds are a bit brighter on this painting, because they were put on white paper…

The painting depicts a large wave curling over a vibrant sunset. The wave is a striking shade of blue with streaks of turquoise and white, while the sunset is a blend of warm oranges, yellows, and reds. The sun, a brilliant white orb, hangs just above the horizon, casting a golden glow on the water. The overall effect is one of serene beauty and the power of nature.
