This question, asked by his then 10-year-old daughter in the 1930s, led Sidney Rubidge on a quest to find the answer. He and his daughter went on a picnic in the Karoo Supergroup to look for fossils, and they got lucky and found a skull right away. Turns out the skull was from a 250 million-year-old gorgonopsian (an animal known for its sabre-teeth)!

Sidney Rubidge, Dr. Bruce Rubidge’s grandfather, started collecting more fossils in the area. He became a legend. Over the course of his career, he lived in a tent for 23 years worth of nights, and found so many fossils that led to so many discoveries, and it all had a huge impact on South African paleontology.

Listen to our chat with Dr. Bruce Rubidge, where he also talks about how people can go on digs today. Dinosaurs, Tent Living, Burning Questions, The Titanic, Titanic, South African, Fun Facts, I Know, Podcast
