‘Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth’ - extended note
Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth, Tate Galler, 1889 (by John Singer Sargent,1856–1925) The amazing (and somewhat bizarre!) dress was created from thousands of irridescent beetle wings (shed not pulled) and was worn by the celebrated English Shakespearean actress, Ellen Terry (1847-1928 - a great nephew is John Gielgud). Sargent (an American painter working in Europe) painted this portrait of Ellen Terry as she appeared while wearing the amazing robe in her role as Lady Macbeth for Henry Irving’s .
