Removing sod - there are a few ways to do this but at this point in the year, the easiest is to rent a sod cutter and remove it all that way: adding in some good compost to your native soil underneath. Removing the sod is especially important if you have any type of invasive grass. You could also till it in (but don’t do this if the grass has rhizomes!) but if you live in an urban setting, make SURE that you know where any internet, water, or electricity lines are before you start running a tiller over the area. An empty spot can be really overwhelming to plan out, so I like to take landscape chalk and mark out smaller areas and then work out from there until I fill the whole space. Focusing on 2-3 shrub like plants, and then small groups of different flowers or veggies quickly will fill in your garden and give it a very full look! If you need low cost options, focus on just annual flowers: zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos, yarrow, feverfew, statice, strawflower, celosia, snapdragons… are just a few that can all easily be started from seed. Long-term: invest in perennials as you can picking the ones that do well in your climate AND that you personally love. Some of my favorites are roses, peonies, delphinium, rudbeckia, foxgloves, scabiosa, alliums, geum and Veronica. And finally, plant in groups of a flower instead of just one or two. Instead of planting one zinnia, plant 12-15 together. Instead of one dahlia, plant 5. Not only does this look amazing, it also will be easier to harvest the flowers for bouquets AND they’ll help support each other in the garden without as much need for artificial support. And one final tip: narrow in on 2-5 supporting colors for your garden to avoid the overwhelm of planning. My personal go-to is pink, peach and coral tones with lavender, blue and some oranges scattered throughout. Save this for reference and let me know if you have any questions! . . . . . #cottagegarden #gardening #flowers #growflowers #bouquets #urbanfarming #flowerfarm #flowerfarmer #ranunculus #dahlias #dahliaseason | Galena Berkompas • Urban Flower Farm • Education | Facebook

Mature love is fueled by respect & understanding. And it's accepting what you can't understand. Love is not perfect, and it's certainly not defined by the words inside of a Hallmark card. Love is hard things like compromise & sacrifice. But it's also simple things like your favorite meal after a hard day. Love is a place where you feel safe. It's living in harmony, even if we're both singing off-key Love is evolving & adapting as life changes us. Mature love is bigger than a Hallmark holiday - because its importance lies in all the little moments. The unexpected sweet gestures. Like love notes scribbled on a foggy mirror. Post-it notes snuck into a lunch bag. Knowing your favorite color. Bringing home something from their favorite restaurant. You get the point... I’ve had luck doing little more than throwing these flower seeds into my garden. In fact, sometimes the less I do, the better flowers germinate and grow. 🤔 For the rest, I start with the @wintersowing method. Of course, you can always follow package instructions and grow indoors. I’m just busy (/lazy) and the set it and forget it works for me! Here’s my list of annuals, perennials, and biennials that once established will come back each year if you allow reseeding. • Hollyhocks • Foxglove • Lupine • Baptisia • Larkspur • Queen Anne’s lace • Echinacea • Yarrow • Poppies (annuals like Iceland and California) • Verbena bonariensis • Tickseed (coreopsis) • Canterbury bells • Salvia • Snapdragons • Delphinium • Penstemmon • Black Eyed Susan • Columbine • Bee Balm • Aster • Feverfew • Dahlias (won’t come back unless winterized) • Forget-me-nots • Daisies I love @johnnys_seeds , @edenbrothers , @bakercreekseeds , @selectseeds and @americanmeadows for seeds. They’re always great quality and they have tons of varieties to choose from. Propagating cuttings and buying bare roots are the next most economical options when planting a garden. If you need help with your design, I have affordable garden designs on my website via the link in my bio. #cuttinggarden #flowergarden #flowergardening #cottagegardens #hollyhocks #flowerseeds | Figment Cottage Gardens | Facebook

They all are cut and come again, which means the more you cut them, the more they produce. They do all need sun, dirt and regular water to thrive, but after that they aren’t fussy and will keep producing as long as you keep cutting from them. Two caveats I’d make is that if you live somewhere hot, sub celosia for snapdragons: celosia does better in hotter climates, snapdragons do better in cooler climates. And for dahlias, if you live in a hotter climate, planting so they get some afternoon shade is a good idea as they like temps between 70-90, but not really above that. Herbs are a personal favorite of mine for a filler and also double as an addition to savory dishes in the kitchen so they’re a win-win! Other than that: sun, soil and water is what you need for loads of flowers! Save this if you need an easy garden plan, and if you have questions about growing any of these, let me know! . . . . . . #dahlias #flowers #grow #flowergarden #gardening #urbanfarming #cottagegarden #flowerfarm #cottagecharm #cottagecore #flowerstagram | Galena Berkompas • Urban Flower Farm • Education | Facebook

707 reactions · 54 shares | Want a cottage garden but don’t know where to start? Create a charming patchwork of flowers and plants with my 8 garden design tips. These principles apply no matter which cottage garden style or varieties you pick! I have more reels on my profile that focus on different aspects of these design guidelines—including spike flowers, cottage garden pairings, etc., so take a look there for extra info. 1️⃣ Start with foundation plantings. Imagine what your garden looks like in winter. Use evergreens, shrubs, and trees to anchor the space. 2️⃣ Pick a color palette. Opt for monochrome for a contemporary look or a rainbow of colors for casual appeal. Just make sure your palette works together using color theory. 3️⃣ Go vertical. Varying height is an absolute must! Think ground cover to trellises, trees, and 6’+ hollyhocks and Joe Pye. Gardens are more dynamic when everything isn’t the same height. 4️⃣ Plant in odd numbers starting with three. One plant here and one plant there is confusing to the eye. Plant in clumps so they take up 2-3 square feet or more. Planting en masse is a gorgeous option too. 5️⃣ Repeat floral groupings. In a border, repeat select varieties down the row. In an open garden, try three or five clumps (or more depending on size) of the same plant. It helps the eye travel around and brings cohesion to the space—allowing you to have a lot of variety without it becoming overwhelming. 6️⃣ Use the trifecta planting formula: 20% spike, 40% dome/mound, and 40% fan and filler shaped plants. 7️⃣ Use sub textures within the main trifecta planting groups like wispy, smooth, serrated, fluffy, prickly, soft, etc. Opposites attract! 8️⃣ Plant for year-round interest. Pick bulbs that emerge in late winter. Choose flowers that bloom summer through fall. Opt for evergreens, ornamental trees, and shrubs (as your foundational plantings) that produce berries in winter, spring flowers, or fall color. #gardendesign #gardendesigner #romanticgarden #countrygardens #gardenideas #cottagegardens | Figment Cottage Gardens | Facebook

No worries—you can still kick-start spring by planting flowers right now, even in the middle of winter! 🌱 All you need is an indoor seed-starting setup and a sheltered space to grow out seedlings for a few weeks. For me, that’s a simple metal rack with shop lights in my laundry room and an unheated greenhouse where I nurture baby plants for 4-6 weeks before transplanting them into the garden. Here’s the list: Bachelor Buttons Black Eyed Susan Campanula Delphinium Feverfew Foxglove Godetia Larkspur Pansy Pincushion Flower Poppies Calendula Snapdragon Strawflowers Sweet Peas Yarrow Love-in-a-Mist Corn Cockle Anemones Ranunculus Peonies Echinacea Stock ✨ Pro tip: Poppy seeds can be sown right now—you can even scatter them on top of the snow! ❄️ P.S. My new seed collection featuring these winter-friendly blooms is launching soon!
