The Carina Nebula (catalogued as NGC 3372; also known as the Grand Nebula, Great Nebula in Carina, or Eta Carinae Nebula) is a large, complex area of bright and dark nebulosity in the constellation Carina, and is located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm. The nebula lies at an estimated distance between 6,500 and 10,000 light-years (2,000 and 3,100 pc) from Earth

Astronomy Photo of the Day: 5/14/14 - 3 Nebulae Parade in Narrowband This image is of three beautiful nebulae in a narrow band. Above, right of the center is the spectacular region, called Messier 8 (also known as the Lagoon Nebula). M8 (another one of its designations) was discovered by Charles Messier in the 18th century. He also discovered the region on the left; M20 (most commonly known as the Trifid nebula) Along with its beautiful, this emission nebula is huge

Friday, Feb. 28, 2014: The glowing wisps of nebula NGC 6979 resulted from a supernova, the explosion of a massive star, over 5000 years ago. The ejected stellar gas continuously collides with gas and dust clouds of the surrounding interstellar medium, causing complex structures and colors. The nebula makes up part of the Cygnus Loop, along with Pickering's Triangular Wisp and the well-known Veil Nebula. Image released February 2014.%u2014 Tom Chao
