height 7.8 " ( 20 cm) width 3.5 " (8cm) hole 3 " (7 cm) I made this beautiful cylindrical-shaped, simple ceramic vase on a potter's wheel. It is completely handmade as well as all my ceramics. Constructed from a blend of stoneware clay and porcelain, it boasts a stunning exterior in blue crystalline glaze, complemented by a dark-glazed interior. A truly exquisite and one-of-a-kind gift, perfect for a mother. Each crystalline piece is distinctive and irreplicable. It underwent firing in an electric kiln at an intense temperature of approximately 2340oF. The crystals, once formed, retain their appearance permanently without alteration. Creating crystalline glazes demands intricate techniques and precision. Each piece originates within my studio, where numerous experiments are conducted to achieve the desired outcome for every individual item. During the firing process, crystals take shape. Zinc oxide serves as the catalyst for initiating crystal growth. When combined with silica, zinc silicate crystals emerge, growing approximately one millimeter every ten minutes within the kiln's temperature soak zone. The crystalline shape is contingent upon the glaze formula and the kiln temperature. To accommodate the highly fluid nature of crystalline glazes, each piece must be carefully placed on its firing ring with a specialized small plate to contain the flowing glaze. Following the firing, meticulous separation and polishing are essential. This entire process is labor-intensive and time-consuming, yet when executed flawlessly, the outcome is breathtaking.
