Emerald Parure of Empress Marie Louise, by Nitot et fils, c 1810. A wedding present from Napoleon I to his 2nd wife. M-L bequeathed the emerald parure to her Habsburg aunt, Archdss Elise. The set in silver and gold, originally fitted with emeralds consists of tiara, necklace and earrings. In 1953 one of her descendents sold to Van Cleef and Arpels who replaced the stones with Persian turquoise. It was then sold to Marjorie Merriweather Post who gave it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1971.
