Notre Dame Seen from the Quai de la Tournelle, abt. 1897/1902. Oil on fabric. Jean-Francois Raffaelli (French, 1850-1924). This view of the Cathedral of Notre Dame is particularly poignant in the context of the devastating fire that ravaged the roof and destroyed the church’s spire on April 15, 2019. Toward the end of the 1880s, Jean-Francois Rafaelli shifted his focus from downtrodden, urban workers to cityscapes featuring the great monuments of Paris.
