Dine - who speak an Athabaskan based language are the largest tribal group. This tribe numbers over 300,000 but approximately 170,000 live on the AZ, NM & UT Reservation. They are headquartered in Window Rock, AZ .

Uranium mining began in the US after WW2, peaking in the years 1955-56. For Navajos, uranium mining was one of the first contacts they had with the broader wage economy. At first, they thought they were the beneficiaries of good fortune. Unknown to these miners, however, science had determined decades before that uranium mining caused lung cancer. The consequences of these events will take a heavy toll on the Indian population in the Four Corners area for decades to come.
