Johannes Kleiman was a board member at Opekta and the firm's bookkeeper. When Nazi police entered the office on August 4, 1944, he was arrested with Victor Kugler and the eight inhabitants of the annex and brought to Gestapo headquarters for interrogation. Kleiman was sent to the Dutch concentration camp at Amersfoort, but was suddenly released at the behest of the Red Cross.
