Shot at Dawn
Between 1914-1920, 3,080 British and Commonwealth soldiers were sentenced to death by courts martial for desertion, cowardice, striking an officer, disobedience, falling asleep on duty or casting away arms and even murder. Many sentences were commuted to years of hard labour and only 346 around 10% were executed. 309 British and Commonwealth Soldiers that were Shot at Dawn for offences other than murder in WW1 were eventually pardoned. “ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL” Lest We Forget
