Northern Point ~ artist Andrew Wyeth, c.1950. Egg tempera on gesso. (This painting is best viewed large.) The unusual perspective depicts a lightning rod on the roof of the Henry Teel house on Teel Island, Maine. As described by the critic Sebastian Smee, Wyeth had a "special brand of hallucinatory clarity". This seemingly simple subject is in fact a very rich study. "...we profoundly misunderstand the very nature of art when we think we know in advance what readers — or audience members or gallery visitors — will derive from it. Or, worse, when we presume to tell them what they *should* derive from it. ...a great work of art finds its completion in the restless, curious, questing mind of the person who encounters it." ~ Margaret Renkl, NYT essay 'It’s Possible to Learn the Right Thing From the Wrong Person' Church Of England, Wrong Person, China, Dark Room, Galveston, The New Yorker, Color Theory, Looking For Women
