Victor Hugo's home library at Guernsey. In October 1855, Victor Hugo arrived on the rainy, wind-swept island of Guernsey seeking refuge. A fierce opponent of the Second Empire of Napoleon III, he had been banished from his native France. The island would become his home for over 15 years and he poured his creative energy into writing his epic novel “Les Misérables” here.
