Louisa, Lady Waterford and the Eglinton Tournament
1859-60. Louisa Anne Beresford (née Stuart), Marchioness of Waterford, wore this dress for a famous multi-day 1839 fancy-dress event known as the Eglinton Tournament. She retained the dress and posed in it for Sir Francis Grant in 1859. Per her mother, Louisa’s "costumes were much admired, and looked simple and in good taste beside some of the more elaborately embroidered." National Portrait Gallery, London.
